Jonathan Lucroy remains out of Brewers’ lineup with concussion symptoms

Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy passed an initial cognitive test after being hit in the mask by a foul tip Tuesday, but two days later he continues to experience post-concussion symptoms and remains out of the starting lineup.

Concussions have ruined the seasons and even the careers of many catchers in recent years, so at some point the Brewers may decide to simply shut down Lucroy for the final three weeks of the season rather than putting his brain at any further risk in meaningless games.

Lucroy’s overall numbers are way down this season, but he’s batting .277 with 23 extra-base hits and an .802 OPS in 55 games since July 1 to match his usual outstanding production.

Martin Maldonado and Nevin Ashley will fill in behind the plate.
