Joe Panik rejoins the Giants after a month-long back injury

It may be too little too late for their playoff chances, but the Giants have activated second baseman Joe Panik from the disabled list after he missed the past month with a back injury.

Panik was having an excellent season before the DL stint, hitting .309 with seven homers and an .816 OPS in 97 games and making his first All-Star team at age 24.

San Francisco turned to rookie Kelby Tomlinson as the primary fill-in at second base and he’s hit .306 in 30 games overall, but at 71-66 the Giants are 7.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West and clinging to the fringes of the Wild Card race.
