It may be too little too late for their playoff chances, but the Giants have activated second baseman Joe Panik from the disabled list after he missed the past month with a back injury.
Panik was having an excellent season before the DL stint, hitting .309 with seven homers and an .816 OPS in 97 games and making his first All-Star team at age 24.
San Francisco turned to rookie Kelby Tomlinson as the primary fill-in at second base and he’s hit .306 in 30 games overall, but at 71-66 the Giants are 7.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West and clinging to the fringes of the Wild Card race.
