Royals pick up Jonny Gomes from Braves

UPDATE: The trade is official. Gomes is a Royal while minor league infielder Luis Valenzuela will be sent to the Braves.

8:44 p.m. ET: We have some more movement with the waiver deadline just three hours away, as FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports that the Royals have acquired veteran outfielder Jonny Gomes from the Braves. Jon Heyman of CBS Sports hears that the Braves are expected to receive a minor league infielder in return.

Gomes, 34, is batting just .221/.325/.364 with seven home runs and 22 RBI over 83 games this season. However, he’s been much better this month and owns an .878 OPS against left-handed pitching. Just a bonus, he’s well regarded around the league as a clubhouse guy. He should be a useful piece on Ned Yost’s bench.

Hey, and after his performance against the Yankees over the weekend, the Royals could always use him for some mop-up duty, too.
