Red Sox manager John Farrell has stepped away from the team for the remainder of the season to undergo treatment for Stage 1 lymphoma, with bench coach Torey Lovullo taking over as Boston skipper.
Farrell replaced Terry Francona as Red Sox manager in 2013–we’ll call Bobby Valentine an unfortunate place-holder–after previously serving as pitching coach under Francona and in a random scheduling coincidence Francona’s new team, the Indians, are in Boston to play a three-game series at Fenway Park beginning tonight.
Which leads to this, which is pretty cool:
John Farrell said Terry Francona will accompany him to 1st chemotherapy session Tue. What a great show of friendship and support. #RedSox
