MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo reports that Mets pitcher Steven Matz is tentatively scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Single-A St. Lucie on Saturday. If all goes well, he could rejoin the Mets at the beginning of September.
Matz, 24, went on the disabled list on July 10 due to a torn left lat muscle. The lefty performed well in his first two major league starts, allowing only two runs on seven hits and five walks with 14 strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings.
Matz was rated as baseball’s 33rd-best prospect entering the season by both Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus.
