Rockies manager Walt Weiss officially names Tommy Kahnle the closer

Tommy Kahnle will serve as the Rockies’ official closer following the demotion of John Axford, manager Walt Weiss confirmed on Saturday, as Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.

The Rockies have not had much stability in the ninth inning throughout the season. LaTroy Hawkins started the season as the closer, but struggled and was replaced by Adam Ottavino. Ottavino, however, suffered an elbow injury and subsequently underwent Tommy John surgery. Axford then stepped into the role and performed well for a while, but hit the skids coming out of the second half.

Kahnle, 26, has put together a solid season, currently owning a 2.60 ERA with a 35/17 K/BB ratio in 27 2/3 innings. He got the save on Friday, his first of the season in his only attempt thus far.

Mets pitcher Zack Wheeler will be placed on the 10-day injured list due to fatigue in his right shoulder, Newsday’s Tim Healey reports. The roster move is retroactive to July 12. Steven Matz will open up a two-game series in Minnesota, starting in Wheeler’s place on Tuesday.

As Healey notes, the soonest Wheeler can return is July 23, which would give him at most two starts ahead of the July 31 trade deadline. Wheeler has frequently been brought up in trade conversations as he can become a free agent after the season and the 42-51 Mets have been freefalling.

Wheeler, 29, owns a 4.69 ERA with 130 strikeouts and 34 walks across 119 innings of work this season.
