Red Sox DH David Ortiz doubled in his 425th plate appearance of the season, taken on Saturday in the second inning against the Tigers. In doing so, he triggered a 2016 option, Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald reports. The option is valued at $11 million with the potential to escalate to $16 million based on how many plate appearances he accrues by season’s end.
Ortiz hit a solo home run in his third trip to the plate on Saturday, his 23rd round-tripper and 63rd RBI. Seven more homers will secure him his ninth career 30-homer season, something only 27 other players have done in baseball history. Though Ortiz was slow out of the gate, he’s hit well since summer began, posting an .815 OPS in June, 1.017 in July, and .808 in August entering Saturday’s action.
