Joe Panik goes on Giants’ disabled list with back injury

Joe Panik’s breakout season has been put on hold, as the Giants placed the All-Star second baseman on the disabled list with lower back inflammation.

Panik hit .305 in his debut last season, but homered just once in 73 games. This year he’s hitting .309 with seven homers, 25 doubles, and nearly as many walks (37) as strikeouts (42) in 97 games for a 105-point jump in OPS to make him one of the best all-around second baseman in baseball.

Ehire Adrianza and Kelby Tomlinson are the likely fill-ins at second base, where Panik has started 93 of 104 games.
