Justin Upton out second straight game with tight oblique

Justin Upton had to be removed from Sunday’s eventual rainout against the Rockies with discomfort in his left oblique, and sitting out Monday’s series opener against the Giants apparently did solve the issue. Upton is out of the Padres’ starting lineup Tuesday for a second straight game. Will Venable will start in left field and bat seventh versus San Francisco right-hander Chris Heston.

Upton’s oblique has been a lingering problem for much of July. It comes with unfortunate timing for the Friars, who appear likely to shop the impending free agent ahead of the July 31 trade deadline.

Upton has 15 home runs and 49 RBI in 89 games this season for the 44-49 Padres.

HOUSTON — Houston slugger Yordan Alvarez left the Astros’ game against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the fifth inning with left ankle discomfort.

Alvarez, who is tied for second in the American League with 37 home runs, rolled his ankle running out of the box on a single in the first inning.

He looked to be in some pain as he jogged to first base and was checked on briefly by manager Dusty Baker and a trainer before remaining in the game. Serving as the designated hitter, he struck out in the third inning before being replaced by pinch-hitter David Hensley for his at-bat in the fifth.
