Moments before this afternoon’s deadline for draft picks to sign the Diamondbacks agreed to terms with No. 1 overall pick Dansby Swanson, with the Vanderbilt shortstop reportedly getting $6.5 million.
The slot recommended bonus for the No. 1 pick is $8.6 million, but reports all along claimed Swanson was willing to sign for less and sure enough he took a nearly $2 million discount.
Arizona would have received the No. 2 overall pick in next year’s draft as compensation had they not signed Swanson, but instead he’ll begin his pro career and every top-10 pick in this year’s draft is signed.
