Friday afternoon is the deadline for teams to sign this year’s draft picks and No. 1 overall pick Dansby Swanson has yet to agree to a deal with the Diamondbacks.
Swanson is the only top-10 pick to remain unsigned and most first-rounders are already playing games in the minors, but Zach Buchanan of the Arizona Republic reports that both Swanson and the Diamondbacks “don’t seem very worried.”
The recommended slot bonus for the No. 1 pick is $8.6 million and Buchanan writes that the Vanderbilt shortstop was believed to be willing to sign for a below-slot deal coming into the draft. And if the Diamondbacks fail to sign Swanson they’ll receive the No. 2 pick in next year’s draft as compensation, just like the Astros did this year after failing to sign top pick Brady Aiken in 2014.
