Per John Blake, the Rangers’ executive VP of communications, the organization has designated pitcher Ross Detwiler for assignment and recalled pitcher Roman Mendez from Triple-A Round Rock.
In 43 innings for the Rangers spread out over seven starts and 10 relief appearances, Detwiler posted an ugly 7.12 ERA with a 28/20 K/BB ratio. He’s owed the remainder of his $3.45 million salary, which likely means he’ll go through unclaimed. The lefty, however, shouldn’t have too much of an issue finding work elsewhere as he’s been an average arm in the past and has utility with his ability to contribute both out of the bullpen or out of the rotation.
Mendez, 24, has pitched 11 2/3 innings at the major league level for the Rangers this season, compiling a 5.40 ERA with a 9/7 K/BB ratio.
