Tigers sign former Rangers closer Neftali Feliz

UPDATE: The Tigers just officially announced the signing. Feliz will join the major league roster for today’s game against the Twins.

10:01 a.m. ET: After passing through waivers unclaimed, Neftali Feliz opted for free agency this week rather than accept a minor league assignment with the Rangers. It apparently didn’t take him long to find a new home:

Feliz, 27, had a 4.58 ERA and 16/9 K/BB ratio over 19 2/3 innings with the Rangers this season. He began the year in the closer role before Rangers manager Jeff Banister decided to go in a different direction in May. Feliz soon landed on the disabled list with an axillary abscess on his right side and ended up missing six weeks. He made one final appearance for the Rangers on July 3 before being designated for assignment.

Feliz has struggled to return to form since his Tommy John surgery in 2012, but assuming Martinez is correct, it’s a worthwhile gamble. If he can show something during the second half, the Tigers could elect to keep him around for 2016.
