The Mets are willing to “overpay” to acquire Athletics 2B/OF Ben Zobrist, according to a report from Joel Sherman of the New York Post. The surging A’s, however, have pulled Zobrist from the market as they’ve won eight of their last 12 games and aren’t that far out of contention.
Zobrist, 34, is owed the remainder of his $7.5 million salary and will become eligible for free agency after the season. He’s batting .266/.360/.456 with five home runs, 29 RBI, and 34 runs scored in 197 plate appearances. He missed four weeks between late April and late May due to knee surgery.
