MLB.com’s Carrie Muskat reports that the Cubs have acquired pitcher Clayton Richard from the Pirates for cash considerations. Richard will start on Saturday for the Cubs against the Marlins. To make room for Richard on the roster, pitcher Donn Roach was optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

Richard, 31, hasn’t pitched in the major leagues since June 2013. He spent most of the 2015 season with Triple-A Indianapolis, posting a 2.09 ERA with a 25/13 K/BB ratio over 56 innings. He had a couple of effective years as part of the Padres’ rotation, but he has battled shoulder injuries throughout his career.
