Bill Stoneman was introduced as the Angels’ general manager today. After hearing his answers to questions about taking the job, I’m sure Angels fans are super enthused.
First, on whether he’s crazy to take over a job that just chewed up the last GM:
“We’ll see. I don’t know. All of this came up so quickly, and it’s only a three- or four-month type thing, so we’ll give it a run.”
Then on whether it’ll be a challenge, at age 71, to take over a team a month before the trade deadline:
“Hopefully I have the energy to do it and my mind still works well enough to do it,” Stoneman said. “I did it for eight years. We’ll see how much I’ve lost over the years.”
Probably for the best that he’s taking this tack. If he acted all rip-roaring and ready to go Mike Scioscia might feel threatened and work to undermine him immediately.
