Andy MacPhail was introduced today as the Phillies’ president-elect, and part of that job will be to evaluate Ruben Amaro for the remainder of the season to see if he should keep his job. But make no mistake, he will be doing his job for the rest of the season.
ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick asked Pat Gillick about that this afternoon, and the answer was pretty clear:
After today’s #Phillies news conference, I asked Pat Gillick what role Ruben Amaro Jr. will play in trade talks in July.

“Ruben is going to be the GM through the end of the season,” Gillick said. “He’s going to make any of the deals that we make.”

“He still has that authority,” Gillick added. “That’s his job — to change personnel. That’s not going to change.”

Some of you may not much care for that answer — the consensus tends to be that Amaro was too late beginning a rebuild and has been too tentative pursuing it — but the man who made the decision to keep him in his post is in the Hall of Fame and you have to assume that his word is final. At least until after the season.
