Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the Phillies are close to beginning their future. And, as we discussed last week, Andy MacPhail may indeed be their man:
[Pat] Gillick swears the Phillies are doing all they can to change that reality and he admitted that includes the search for the man who will be his eventual replacement as the team president. He did not deny that Andy MacPhail, a former general manager and team president with the Minnesota Twins, Chicago Cubs and Baltimore Orioles, was at the top of his list.
Brookover adds that Gillick expects to make an announcement soon, suggesting that MacPhail could indeed be their man.
Gillick expects to stay on for a time after a new team president is found. He describes it as “sort of like what they do at private schools . . . They hire a headmaster a year ahead of time.” He also adds that, after being able to watch the second half of this season, the new guy would then make decisions about the future, or lack thereof, of Ruben Amaro and Ryne Sandberg.
