Red Sox DH David Ortiz contributed to Sunday’s 13-2 rout of the Royals with a two-run home run, hit in the fourth inning off of starter Chris Young. It marked the 476th career home run for the 39-year-old, breaking a tie with Stan Musial and Willie Stargell to move into sole possession of 29th place on baseball’s all-time home run list.
Ortiz would need to surge to move up two more rungs on the list, as his next-closest targets are Lou Gehrig and Fred McGriff at 493. Ortiz now has 10 home runs, 31 RBI, and a .236/.322/.416 triple-slash line on the year. He would have to pick things up at the dish in order to hit 17 home runs the rest of the way.
