Brandon Workman undergoes Tommy John surgery

Two months ago Brandon Workman was advised not to undergo Tommy John elbow surgery following a visit with Dr. James Andrews, but the Red Sox right-hander went under the knife Monday after the rest-and-rehab route didn’t work.

Workman will miss the remainder of this season and most of 2016, putting his future with the Red Sox in doubt at age 26. He posted a 5.11 ERA and 117/51 K/BB ratio in 129 innings for Boston during the past two seasons while splitting time between the rotation and the bullpen.
