The Athletics have placed reliever Pat Venditte on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right shoulder, the club announced on Twitter on Friday evening. The 29-year-old switch-pitcher made his major league debut on June 5 and appeared in four games, holding the opposition scoreless on one hit and two walks with four strikeouts.
Some might ask why a switch pitcher would need to go on the disabled list with an injury to only one of his arms. As Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle explains, most of Venditte’s value comes from almost always having the platoon advantage. As a typical one-handed pitcher, he’s not nearly as useful.
