Brendan Ryan rejoins Yankees’ infield mix after injury

Brendan Ryan is off the disabled list and back on the Yankees’ active roster after missing the first two-plus months of the season with a strained calf muscle.

Ryan remains an excellent defensive infielder and could potentially steal some playing time from struggling shortstop Didi Gregorius, but he’s hit .167, .197, and .194 in the past three seasons and hasn’t topped a .650 OPS since 2009.

Gregorius has hit .260 versus righties compared to .181 versus lefties, so manager Joe Girardi could form a quasi-platoon platoon at shortstop.
