Orioles catcher Matt Wieters is ready to return from Tommy John surgery

Matt Wieters is expected to complete his comeback from Tommy John elbow surgery Friday by coming off the disabled list and rejoining the Orioles for his first MLB game action since May 10, 2014.

Baltimore figures to ease Wieters back into the mix with plenty of days off and some time at designated hitter, in part to keep his surgically repaired elbow healthy and in part because fill-in Caleb Joseph has done a nice job behind the plate.

As a 29-year-old impending free agent Wieters has a lot riding on his staying healthy and returning to his status as one of the league’s best all-around catchers 11-and-a-half months removed from surgery.
