Tanaka allowed just three hits and one run over seven innings, striking out nine Seattle hitters. He probably could have gone the distance — his final pitch count was just 78 — but you can understand why Yankees manager Joe Girardi opted to play it safe. Tanaka missed five weeks with a right forearm strain and tendinitis in his right wrist. And the Japanese hurler also still has a partially-torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow.
