Travis Ishikawa designated for assignment by the Giants

Despite starting (out of position in left field) for the Giants during last year’s World Series-winning playoff run first baseman Travis Ishikawa began this season at Triple-A and now he’s been designated for assignment.

Ishikawa is off the 40-man roster and will either be traded or exposed to the waiver wire. He was off to a decent start at Triple-A, but the 31-year-old journeyman is a bit of a tweener in that his bat isn’t quite good enough to really be an asset at first base and his defense isn’t quite good enough to handle a corner outfield spot regularly.

He’s a career .259 hitter with a .719 OPS in 444 games as a big leaguer, including a .731 OPS in 47 games for the Giants last year.

Red Sox center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. scaled the center field fence to rob Padres shortstop Luis Urías of a solo home run in the fourth inning of Sunday afternoon’s game. Urías was trying to take advantage of a 0-1 slider from Ryan Brasier. Had Bradley not made the grab, the Padres’ lead would have been extended to 4-1.

Unfortunately for the Red Sox, they weren’t able to take advantage of Bradley’s effort, dropping Sunday’s contest 3-1. They still won the series against the Padres, however. The Sox will continue their road trip for two games against the Rockies followed by three versus the Angels.
