Bruce Chen was designated for assignment by the Indians over the weekend after being knocked around for nine runs in 6 1/3 innings over two starts. Rather than pitch in the minors again or seek an opportunity elsewhere, the 37-year-old left-hander has decided to retire from baseball.
Here’s part of his announcement on Twitter:
Chen will finish his career with an 82-81 record and a 4.62 ERA in 227 starts and 173 relief appearances over 17 seasons. Including his brief stint with Cleveland this season, he ended up pitching for 11 different teams.
