On the disabled list with a shoulder injury, Rays left-hander Drew Smyly is expected to rejoin the starting rotation Friday against the Blue Jays.
Smyly has been out since spring training, but pronounced himself “definitely” ready to return following a minor-league rehab start Sunday.
Overall in three rehab outings Smyly tossed 8.2 shutout innings with a 9/3 K/BB ratio and .071 opponents’ batting average, so his shoulder is clearly feeling good. However, his longest start was just 3.2 innings and the Rays may have him on a limited pitch count initially.
Smyly was fantastic for the Rays last season after coming over from the Tigers in the David Price trade, throwing 48 innings with a 1.70 ERA and 44/11 K/BB ratio.
