Garrett Richards returned from knee surgery throwing gas

Angels right-hander Garrett Richards returned from the disabled list Sunday to make his first start since suffering a season-ending knee injury in late August and he looked pretty good against the Astros.

Richards walked four batters and allowed four runs in five innings, but he also averaged 95.4 miles per hour with his fastball and topped out at 97.4 mph. He struck out four, induced a lot of ground balls, and generally looked healthy in his comeback from a torn patellar tendon.

His health is a huge key to the Angels’ success this season, because prior to blowing out his knee covering first base Richards was having a breakout year with a 13-4 record, 2.61 ERA, and 164/51 K/BB ratio in 169 innings at age 26.
