All offseason frequent reports had the Mets trying to trade right-hander Dillon Gee, but once Zack Wheeler was ruled out for the season following elbow surgery the assumption was that Gee’s presence was suddenly a lot more welcome in New York.
However, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York the Mets “still may try to trade Gee within the month” even though he’ll open the season in the rotation. Rubin writes that some “team officials” want to see prospect Rafael Montero in the rotation instead.
Gee is 29 years old with a 3.91 career ERA, including a 4.00 ERA and 94/43 K/BB ratio in 137 innings last season. He’s owed $5.3 million for 2015 and is also under team control for 2016 via arbitration.
