Diamondbacks acquire catcher Mike Blanke from the White Sox

Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reports that the White Sox have sent catcher Mike Blanke to the Diamondbacks for cash.

Blanke, 26, posted a .642 OPS with Double-A Birmingham in 2013. Last season, he went down to Great Falls in the Rookie League to try his hand as a pitcher. In 13 1/3 innings, he allowed 11 runs (seven earned) on 17 hits and 12 walks while striking out 10.

The Diamondbacks need catching depth, so Blanke will simply serve in that role in the minors. GM Dave Stewart recently said he doesn’t plan to trade for a catcher, happy to go into the season with Tuffy Gosewich as the starting backstop.
