Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright made his Grapefruit League debut on Saturday afternoon against the Braves. The right-hander went four scoreless innings, holding the opposition to four hits and a walk while striking out three. It was a Braves split-squad, but a success nevertheless.
Wainwright, 33, suffered an abdominal strain in mid-February, explaining the late start to the spring. Barring any setbacks over the next two weeks, he should be ready to start on Opening Night against the Cubs on April 5.
Wainwright finished third in NL Cy Young voting behind Clayton Kershaw, going 20-9 with a 2.38 ERA and a 179/50 K/BB ratio over 227 innings.
