The New Britain Rock Cats have a new name . . . the Hartford Yard Goats

The New Britain Rock Cats of the Eastern League are relocating to Hartford next year. And with it, they’ll be getting a new name. There was a contest to name it and, thankfully, the weirdest name won:

I don’t even know what a Yard Goat is, but it sounds pretty spiffy.

The other finalists were pretty weird too, by the way: the Hedgehogs, the Praying Mantis, the River Hogs and the Whirlybirds. All of these, it seems, from minor league baseball’s new habit of quirky names a la the Iron Pigs and Flying Squirrels.

Go goats.
