Alex Colome released from Florida hospital on Wednesday after bout with pneumonia

Rays right-hander Alex Colome was a late arriver to spring training this year because of visa issues in his native Dominican Republic and then he had to be sent to a local hospital with a case of pneumonia just a couple days after unpacking his bags.

Colome got released from that hospital Wednesday, according to beat writer Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, but the 26-year-old probably won’t be cleared to resume baseball activities until next week and he can safely be ruled out of the competition for the Rays’ season-opening starting rotation.

Alex Cobb (forearm) and Drew Smyly (shoulder) are also ticketed for the disabled list.

It wasn’t a very good winter for the Rays and it has not been a good spring.
