Tommy John elbow surgery has claimed another young pitcher and this time he’s not even in the pros yet. Stanford right-hander Cal Quantrill, projected by many to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 draft, will undergo Tommy John surgery this week.
Quantrill is the son of longtime big leaguer Paul Quantrill and followed up a fantastic freshman season by getting off to a good start as a sophomore this year, but now he’ll miss the remainder of this year and likely a big chunk of 2016 as well.
However, as we saw with Lucas Giolito and the Nationals in 2012 and Jeff Hoffman and the Blue Jays in 2014 teams are now willing to invest first-round picks in pitchers sidelined by elbow injuries in the hopes that they’ll return to their previous form.
