Cubs paying for Ernie Banks’ funeral expenses

It was reported last month that Hall of Famer and Cubs legend Ernie Banks had just $16,000 in assets at the time of his death. An ugly legal battle has emerged since his passing and the situation only got more complicated this week when the funeral home that handled his services made a claim for more than $35,000 that was left unpaid. That’s when the Cubs decided to step in.

According to the Chicago Tribune (via the Associated Press), Cubs spokesman Julian Green said Friday night that they plan to cover the funeral expenses for Banks.

“We learned of the story through the news media, saw that the funeral home had filed a claim,” Green said. “We weren’t aware that the bill had not been handled. After that, we immediately called the funeral home and told them we would take care of it on Monday.”

This is a drop in the bucket for the Cubs, but good on them for taking care of it. Still, this situation continues to be sad.
