Yankees prospect Luis Torrens needs shoulder surgery

As first reported by MLB.com beat writer Bryan Hoch, Yankees prospect Luis Torrens is scheduled to undergo surgery Wednesday to repair a torn labrum in his right (throwing) shoulder. The expectation is that he will have to sit out the entire 2015 season.

Torrens recently grabbed the ninth spot on Baseball America‘s listing of the Top 10 prospects in the Yankees organization.

The 18-year-old Venezuelan catcher has batted just .249/.338/.347 with four home runs in 107 professional games between rookie ball and Low-A, but he’s regarded as a good defender behind the plate with a very strong throwing arm.
