Garrett Richards expected to miss first 2-3 weeks of season

There’s been some talk that Angels right-hander Garrett Richards might be ready for the beginning of the 2015 regular season despite tearing the patellar tendon in his left knee last August. But manager Mike Scioscia put that to rest Sunday in camp …

“I think he’s transitioning, getting close to what a regular spring training would be,” Scioscia told beat writer Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register. “They haven’t fully taken all the reins off him, but you can kind of project. He’s going to be two or three weeks behind some guys. You get a window to where you can expect him during the season. … He’s not going to be able to rush because the medical staff is not going to let him. He’s got to pass every plateau. It’s great he’s going to shoot for opening day, but he’s not going to be ready.”

Richards broke out with an ace-like 2.61 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and 8.8 K/9 in 168 2/3 innings last year.
