Angels first baseman Albert Pujols is signed through 2021, but the veteran hinted that he might have to retire in 2020. Not for any currently-existing injury concerns, mind you, but because his daughter, Sophia, is a competitive gymnast and is eyeing the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, as Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports. Fletcher notes that Sophia would be 14 years old in 2020 and the minimum age requirement to compete in gymnastics is 16.
2020 would be the second-to-last year of Pujols’ 10-year, $240 million contract with the Angels signed in December 2011.
“That might be the year I have to retire,” Pujols said with a smile. “You can put that in paper. I don’t want to miss it.”
Pujols bounced back from an injury-plagued 2013 season, finishing 2014 with a .272/.324/.466 slash line along with 28 home runs and 105 RBI. He had missed 61 games in 2013 due to plantar fasciitis in his left foot.
