From CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman comes word that the Mets have avoided arbitration with closer Jenrry Mejia by reaching a one-year, $2.595 million deal.
Mejia requested a salary of $3 million from the Mets and was offered $2.1 million when arbitration figures were exchanged on January 16. The two sides settled slightly toward the 25-year-old right-hander’s favor.
Mejia was arbitration-eligible for the first time as a Super 2 qualifier. He’ll also be arbitration-eligible in 2016, 2017, and 2018. Free agency comes in 2019.
