Garrett Richards’ arbitration hearing set for February 11

According to beat writer Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times, an arbitration hearing for Angels starter Garrett Richards has been scheduled for February 11. Teams and players usually come to terms before hearings are needed — thus avoiding any drama — but Richards is a complicated case.

The 26-year-old righty broke out with an ace-like 2.61 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and 8.8 K/9 in 168 2/3 innings last season, but he tore his left patellar tendon at Fenway Park in late August and might not be ready for the beginning of the 2015 campaign. Richards, who’s arbitration-eligible for the first time, asked for a salary of $3.8 million and was offered $2.4 million from the Angels when figures were exchanged on January 16.

Richards qualified as a Super 2 player, so he carries four years of arbitration eligibility.
