The baseball world has been celebrating the life of Hall of Famer and Cubs great Ernie Banks today following his passing yesterday. One neat thing that has been making the rounds is this 1953 scouting report from when Banks was 22 years old as a member of the Kansas City Monarchs in the Negro Leagues.
“Good hitter” with a “very good” attitude and “no outstanding weaknesses.” Well done, Mr. Wise.
The Monarchs eventually sold Banks’ contract to the Chicago Cubs for $10,000. He skipped the minor leagues (as indicated by Mr. Wise’s “can play now” recommendation) and became the Cubs’ first African-American player.
