The Rays are getting calls about Wil Myers

It’s believed that the Rays are most likely to trade Matt Joyce this offseason as he goes into his final year of arbitration, but Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports that they have received calls from “about a half-dozen teams” regarding the availability of Wil Myers. Who wouldn’t want a promising, cost-controlled bat?

After winning the American League Rookie of the Year Award in 2013, Myers was limited to 87 games this past season due to a wrist injury and batted just .222/.294/.320 with six home runs. The Rays may be selling low if they traded him right now, but Topkin opines that “they could be tempted to deal him if the package — whether it’s one top young player or a package of several — was worthwhile.”

Myers turns 24 today and is under team control through 2019, so even coming off a disappointing season, it would take a huge return for the Rays to even consider the possibility of a trade. Crazier things have happened, but we can probably put this one in the extremely unlikely file.
