Jon Heyman reports that the Marlins have made a six-year offer to Jose Fernandez for someplace in the vicinity of $40 million in guaranteed dollars.
Of course, Fernandez is a Scott Boras client and rare is the Scott Boras client who doesn’t make it to free agency. At the moment Fernandez only has two years of service time so he hasn’t even hit arbitration. It’s possible, though, that the Marlins are calculating that Fernandez, fresh off of Tommy John surgery, may feel a little more vulnerable at the moment than your typical Boras client and jump at guaranteed riches.
Seems doubtful, but I suppose it’s worth a try.
