The Pirates have claimed shortstop Pedro Florimon off waivers from the Nationals, James Wagner of the Washington Post reports. Jettisoning Florimon allowed the Nationals some wiggle room to complete their 40-man roster. The Nationals had picked him up off waivers from the Twins back in September.
Florimon, 27, has had trouble handling major league pitching since making his debut in 2011 with the Orioles. Over 692 plate appearances, he has mustered a paltry .204/.266/.300 slash line with 10 home runs and 57 RBI. However, he does provide speed on the bases and plus defense.
