Report: Cubs the “clear front-runner” for Russell Martin

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports hears from executives involved in the bidding for free agent catcher Russell Martin that the Cubs are the “clear front-runner”. He adds that Russell is likely to fetch a deal in the range of four years and $64 million.

Martin is the prize of this off-season’s class of free agent catchers after batting .290/.402/.430 with 11 home runs and 67 RBI for the Pirates. He continues to draw praise for his defense, pitch framing, and handling a pitching staff as well.

In the event the Cubs do land Martin, they will likely make 27-year-old catcher Welington Castillo available.

Red Sox center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. scaled the center field fence to rob Padres shortstop Luis Urías of a solo home run in the fourth inning of Sunday afternoon’s game. Urías was trying to take advantage of a 0-1 slider from Ryan Brasier. Had Bradley not made the grab, the Padres’ lead would have been extended to 4-1.

Unfortunately for the Red Sox, they weren’t able to take advantage of Bradley’s effort, dropping Sunday’s contest 3-1. They still won the series against the Padres, however. The Sox will continue their road trip for two games against the Rockies followed by three versus the Angels.
