Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak has issued a statement on the recent report out of the Dominican Republic that outfield prospect Oscar Taveras was heavily-intoxicated during his fatal car crash …

“We have seen the media reports regarding Oscar Taveras that have come out this afternoon, but have yet to receive any official notification from the Dominican.  Until we have the opportunity to review the official report, we cannot confirm details.  While we are still working to obtain the facts, it won’t change the fact that this is a terrible tragedy.  We have an obligation to use this as an opportunity to educate our players that they must take responsibility for themselves both on and off the field.”

Oscar and his 18-year-old girlfriend died October 26 when Taveras’ car smashed into a tree in the Dominican.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports that the Rangers and pitcher Jordan Lyles have agreed to a contract. ESPN’s Jeff Passan provided the details, reporting that it is a two-year, $16 million deal.

Lyles, 29, split last season between the Pirates and Brewers, performing much better with the latter. Overall, he compiled a 4.15 ERA with a 146 strikeouts and 55 walks across 141 innings. It was a return to full-time starting for Lyles, who had performed mostly as a reliever from 2016-18.

The Rangers also inked Kyle Gibson to a three-year, $30 million contract last week. Gibson and Lyles will join a rotation that also includes Mike Minor and Lance Lynn as well as youngster Kolby Allard.
