The Cubs announced this afternoon that they have exercised their club option on right-hander Jacob Turner for 2015. The option is worth $1 million or $500,000 if he’s in the minors.
After posting a 3.74 ERA in 20 starts with the Marlins in 2013, Turner struggled to the tune of a 5.97 ERA in 12 starts and eight relief appearances with Miami this season prior to being traded to the Cubs in August. He had a 6.49 ERA and 17/10 K/BB ratio in 24 2/3 innings over six starts and two relief appearances with Chicago down the stretch. Still, he doesn’t turn 24 until next May and $1 million is a small price to pay for the chance that something clicks for the former top prospect.
Turner is under team control through 2018.
