Blue Jays, Melky Cabrera “far apart” in negotiations

Outfielder Melky Cabrera appears destined to hit free agency after Blue Jays senior vice president of baseball operations and GM Alex Anthopoulos said, in his own words, that the two sides were “far apart” in negotiations, as Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi reports.

Anthopoulos said that Cabrera hitting the open market may not be the worst thing and that there would still be “a chance to circle back and get a deal done.”

2014 was one of the best seasons of Cabrera’s career, as he batted .301/.351/.458 with 16 home runs and 73 RBI, though he missed the final month of the season with an avulsion fracture suffered during a dive back to first base. The 29-year-old also missed time during the 2013 season due to a knee injury, and it was later discovered that he had a benign tumor on his spine that caused lower leg pain.
