James Shields was in “excruciating pain” and passed a kidney stone during the ALCS

Royals manager Ned Yost chose Jason Vargas over James Shields to start Game 4 of the ALCS and now we know one factor that played into the decision: Shields was busy passing a kidney stone.

Shields told Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star that “it was excruciating pain” and he “wasn’t feeling good” before undergoing an MRI exam, at which point the Royals’ training staff determined that he’d already passed the kidney stone.

Now he’s slated to start Game 1 of the World Series tomorrow night, on 11 days’ rest, in a matchup against Giants ace Madison Bumgarner.
