We heard some vague comments regarding Adam Wainwright’s health from Cardinals manager Mike Matheny and teammates throughout the postseason, but general manager John Mozeliak said during an end-of-season media session today that the staff ace will not require elbow surgery.
According to Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com, Wainwright saw the team’s medical staff on Friday and no long-term concerns with his elbow were found. The Cardinals expect that he’ll benefit from normal rest during the offseason.
While Wainwright won’t need surgery, the Cardinals will likely limit his workload during spring training next year. And it’s easy to understand why. Including the postseason, he has logged 519 2/3 innings since the start of 2013.
